Development Tools which work with PortAsm:

Software Development Systems (SDS) produce the Single Step Debugger and PowerPC Simulator. Particularly interesting on this site is the downloadable demonstration version of Single Step for Windows, which includes working versions of SDS's PowerPC simulator, debugger, and the Diab Data assembler. With this and our demonstration versions of PortAsm/68K and PortAsm/86, you can actually translate small CISC assembler programs to PowerPC assembler, assemble them, and debug them on a Windows PC under the SDS simulator!

The Metrowerks CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment offers easy-to-use development tools for Macintosh and embedded development, and PortAsm is available in versions hosted as CodeWarrior plug-ins.

The MetaWare web site has information about MetaWare High C/C++ and the MetaWare PowerPC assembler, both of which can be used with PortAsm for embedded development for the EABI standard. They can also be used with the SDS debugger and simulator.

The Wind River Systems web site has information on their Tornado tool set including the VxWorks embedded operating system.

Learning About PowerPC Assembler

We recommend the book `PowerPC Programming for Intel Programmers' by Kip McClanahan (published by IDG, ISBN 1-56884-306-2). Although primarily aimed at programmers familiar with the Intel architecture, it is actually a good introduction to the PowerPC in general. It comes with a CD containing a whole lot of useful stuff including old versions of the MetaWare PowerPC assembler, and an early release of our own demonstration version of PortAsm/86.
